Recognitions & Presentations

Golden Achievement Award

Lacy Krebs, Heartland Mental Health Supervisor, was honored by the Heartland Early Education Kansas Head Start Association (KHSA) with the 2020 Kansas Head Start Association Support Staff of the Year Award.

 

Superintendent’s Excellence Awards

Certificates were presented to the following students who qualified for state competitions:

 

Salina High School Central/Choir: Central High had the following students selected to the KMEA All-State Mixed Choir. They were Payton Griep and Nate Weis. One student selected to the All-State Women’s Choir was Joelle Pfannenstiel. Ryan Holmquist is the vocal music director.

 

Salina High School South/Choir:  South High had the following students selected to the KMEA All-State Choir. They were Amaya Dungan, Jacob Sweet, Whitney Turner, Courtney White and Lauren Zimmerman. Eddie Creer, Jr. is the vocal music director.

 

Salina High School Central/Band:  Central High had the following students selected to participate in the KMEA All-State Jazz Band. Tyler Corl was selected for trombone and Jose Arrieta Renteria was selected for bass trombone. Miles Denning was selected to participate as an alternate in the KMEA All-State Band for timpani. Ben Rohrer is the band director.

 

Salina High School South/Orchestra: South High had the following student selected to participate in the KMEA All-State Orchestra. Maria Bonilla was selected for violin. Alyssa Lane is the orchestra director.

 

Salina High School Central/Orchestra: Central High had the following students selected to participate in the KMEA All-State Orchestra. Jonathan Hess was selected for viola and Nelson Gutsch was chosen for bass. Lindsay Modin is the orchestra director.

 

Salina High School Central/Thespian:  Central High Thespian students were chosen as first place winners of the state one-act play, “Lockdown” at the 2020 Kansas State Thespian Festival. Students included Spencer Angell, Violet Arb, Moses Brown, Robert Campbell IV, Tyler Campbell, Joshua Cunningham, Erin Flax, Janessa Harrison, Harper Johnston, Lillian Myers and Joshua Warner. Gary Demuth is the theatre director.

 

Salina High School South/Thespian:  South High Thespian Troupe received Gold Honor Troupe award at the 2020 Kansas State Thespian Conference. Troupe members included Jacob Sweet, Whitney Turner, Lauren Zimmerman, Mia Dennett, Andrew Lagerman, Ashley Carraway and Aidan Heusman. Kate Lindsay is the theatre director.

 

Salina High School South/Debate:  The Debate team included Alexander Figeroa Castro, Francisco Guardado, Avan Tran, Ava Williamson, Faith Bates, Embrianna Fleming, Zoe Moreland, Gabe Nunez, Seth Carter, Emilee Jordan, Rylan Humphrey, Savannah Bonilla, Maya Daily, Ayleen Escobedo, Miriam Benavides, Santiago Vasquez, Tristin Kinderknecht, Gavin Jones, Tiana Marion and Ariana Nunez. The team is coached by Megan Hagaman.

 

Salina High School Central/Art:  Kansas Regional Scholastic Art Awards Competition participants included Layna Kinnaird, Gold Key and Silver Key; Aleigha Haller, Gold Key; Jessalyn Colborn, Silver Key; Madeline Paradis, Silver Key; Katelyn Weis, Silver Key; and Lexus DiLoreto, Honorable Mention. Larry Cullins and Kiersten Dykes are the art teachers.

 

KESA Presentation

Bonnie Welty, Lakewood Middle School principal, presented an accreditation update for Lakewood Middle  School.

    Audit Contract

    The board of education approved the audit contract with Varney & Associates, CPAs, LLC for the year ending June 30, 2020.

    The board of education approved the 2020-2021 school calendar.

    The board of education approved the tentative calendar for the 2021-2022 school year.

     

    School Board Reports

  • Mark Bandré, board member, reported on 305 LIVE scheduled for Saturday, February 22 at Central High School beginning at 7:00 p.m.
  • Jim Fletcher, board member, attended the South High School musical, several high school sporting events, the Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet, and negotiations training provided by the Kansas Association of School Boards (KASB).
  • Emma Doherty, board member, attended the Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet and a meeting of the Christian Women’s Connection where students from Lakewood Middle School presented.
  • Ann Zimmerman, president, attended the Chamber of Commerce Board Meeting and Annual Banquet, the musical at SHS, and KASB negotiations and new board member trainings.

Superintendent's Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, participated in a CSI Panel at Lakewood Middle School and observed a “chopped” competition at both high schools where culinary arts students brought their best game to make MREs taste better. Superintendent Exline updated the board on the Strategic Planning process and provided information on the Asian art exhibit at the Salina Art Center on loan from the University of Kansas. Over the last year, several of our teachers collaborated with Salina Arts and Humanities and the Spencer Museum of Art staff to design lessons based on the art that is on loan.
