You Make A Difference

The You Make a Difference Award is presented to staff members whose exemplary actions support students, colleagues and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Recipients of these awards receive a lapel pin and a handwritten note personally delivered by a board of education member.

Tracy Olson, Foodservice Bookkeeper

Oakdale Elementary School

Oakdale Elementary School staff nominated Tracy for her level of caring for Oakdale children. Tracy and her staff always have a hug and smile for the children coming through the lunch line. The Oakdale staff members want her to know how lucky they feel that she works in their building. Thank you, Tracy, for making a difference at Oakdale!

Kimberlee Stauffer, 4th Grade Teacher

Sunset Elementary School

Kimberlee took the lead on designing an English Language Arts Revolutionary War Unit breakout activity. The result was a highly engaging activity where students worked in teams and practiced collaboration, communication, critical thinking and problem solving. Thank you Kimberlee for making a difference at Sunset!

Tiffany Wesoloski, Nurse

Cottonwood Elementary School

It has been said that Nurse Wesoloski may be the busiest person at Cottonwood. During first semester she had 3,315 visits to her office. She is always friendly and professional, known to build great relationships with students, parents and staff. Thank you Tiffany, for truly taking care of the Cottonwood family and making a difference!

Challenge Awards Presentation

Deena Horst, District 6 State Board member, presented Challenge Awards to Oakdale, Heusner and Schilling elementary schools and South Middle School for outstanding achievement and uncommon accomplishments based on Kansas assessment results in reading and math.

Solid Waste Disposal and Recycling Proposal

The board of education approved the proposal for solid waste disposal to Salina Iron & Metal Company in the estimated weekly amount of $675.49.

South High Forensics Out-of-State Field Trips

The board of education approved the National Individual Events Tournament of Champions to Omaha, NE on May 10-12, 2019; the National Catholic Forensics League Grand National Tournament to Milwaukee, WI on May 23-28, 2019; and the National Speech and Debate Association National Tournament to Dallas, TX on June 15-23, 2019.

The board of education approved Policy EE-Food Services Management on second reading.

Textbook Adoptions

The board of education approved the following textbook adoptions: (1) Earth & Space Science; (2) Marketing 4e; (3) Financial Algebra: Advanced Algebra with Financial Applications, 2nd ed.; (4) Code Blue: A Tale of Compassion, Power, and Politics; (5) Foundations in Personal Finance; and (6) My Perspectives.

The board of education approved the 2019-2020 elementary, middle and high school handbooks.

Athletic Handbook Approval

The board of education approved the 2019-2020 athletic handbook.

Proposed Textbook Adoption

Linn Exline, executive director of school improvement, reviewed and evaluated the following textbook: Illustrative Mathematics, McGraw-Hill Education (2020).

Superintendent's Report

Dr. James Hardy, superintendent of schools, attended the CKCIE Board of Control meeting and reported that Kyle Griffitts, principal at Cottonwood Elementary, has been asked to join the Kansas Department of Education's Blue Ribbon Taskforce on Bullying. Dr. Hardy attended a workshop about human trafficking presented by the Kansas Attorney General's office. He hosted the final Equity Council meeting for the 2018-2019 school year and reported that recommended goals will be presented to the Board of Education.
