Recognitions/Presentations

Superintendent's Excellence Awards

Certificates were presented to students who participated at the state level in fall activities:

Cross Country/Salina High School Central: Team members are Brandon Falcon, Kadyn Cobb, Brianna Torres, Cora White, Madison Pham, Kora Powers and Peyton Griffin. Joe Wilkerson is the team's coach.

Cross Country/Salina High School South: Morgan Fischer placed 72nd at state, Keetan Munsell placed 13th at state and Brandon Rectenwald. Travis Peterson is the team's coach.

Girls Tennis/Salina High School South: The South Lady Cougar Tennis Team had 6 state qualifiers this season. The team finished 3rd overall in team standings at the state tournament. Robyn Logan had a season record of 27-12, placed 8th in singles at state, Class 5A All-State, Class 5A Academic All-State player and All-AVCTL singles player; Iliana Armbrust had a season record of 16-12; Sydney McAdoo and Jadyn Zamecnik had an overall record of 33-7, placed 6th in state doubles, were both Class 5A All-State, Class 5A Academic All-State players, All-AVCTL doubles players and both regional doubles champions; Jillian Coleman and Alexxa Nunemaker had an overall record of 20-11, placed 9th in state doubles, were both Class 5A All-State, Class 5A Academic All-State players and All-AVCTL doubles players. Ryan Stuart is the team's coach.

Girls Tennis/Salina High School Central: The Central Lady Mustang Tennis Team had 6 state qualifiers this season. The team finished as League Champions, Regional Champions and placed 4th overall in the state championships. Emery Newton finished 5th at regionals and 12th at state; Callie Sanborn finished 7th at state and was the regional champion; Maddie Stack and Grace Holgerson were both 4-year letter winners, members of the 100 Career Win Club in varsity competition, placed 4th and 7th at state tournament the last two years; and Camryn Phelps and Reagan Geihsler were state qualifiers. Mike Goll is the team's coach.

Golf/Salina High School South: The South High Girls golf team had two state qualifiers this season. Tatum Forrester and Zoe Norton qualified at state. Kayley Hurley is the team's coach.

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School South: The South High math team finished 4th overall. Team members include Iliana Armbrust, Lainey Brown, Zach Davidson, Emma Shulda, Avery McComber, Zozen Reitz, Aum Patel, Reese Altman, Nathan Streeter, Peyton Froome, David Ollenberger, Trey Turner, Seth Thompson, Isaac Mitchell, Taylor Davison, Luke Streit and Gage Roberts. Candace Mahoney and Jason Hooper are the team's sponsors.

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School Central: Team members include Charles Goldbach, Candace Gomendoza, Ben Kraft, Spencer Angell, Reed McHenry, Hana North, Kadyn Cobb, Houston Griffitts, Caleb Kline, Molly Michaelis, Harper Williams, Gage Burmaster, Riley Counts, Callahan Figgs and Phoebe Helton. Deanna Cullins is the team's sponsor.

Eco-Meet/Salina High School South: Gavin Jones placed 2nd at state. Matt Mosher is the team's sponsor.

Eco-Meet/Salina High School Central: The Eco-Meet team placed 6th at state. Team members include Avery Darby, Katrianna Davis, Erin Flax and Reagan Stein. Susan Gaskill is the team's sponsor.

Robotics/Salina High School South: Team members include Nicholas Lake, Jason Nguyen, Aum Patel, Grant Osborn, Evan Patchett, Anastasia Phomchaleun, Nathan Streeter, Jacob Wilcox and Jonah Winsky. Adam Lesser and Lyric Cairns are the coaches.

Encumbrance Listings

The board of education approved the following encumbrances: (1) AOS-ConvergeOne, $280,850, purchase of equipment needed for the second and final phase of replacing the data-switching infrastructure for the district; and (2) CDW-G, $68,856, Dell accidental damage coverage for chromebooks.

Heartland Early Education Self-Assessment

The board of education approved the Heartland Early Education's Self-Assessment results as required by the Head Start Program Performance Standards.

Interlocal Agreement

The board of education approved the interlocal agreement and membership in the Smoky Hill Education Service Center effective July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2024.

Board Team for Negotiations

The board of education appointed Nedra Elbl, board president, Ann Zimmerman and Jim Fletcher, board members, to the board team for negotiations with NEA-Salina. Members include executive director of human resources/legal services and executive director of business.

Board Team for Meet & Confer

The board of education appointed Emma Doherty and Gabe Grant, board members, to the board team for the meet and confer process with representatives of the classified staff. Members include executive director of human resources/legal services, executive director of business, and manager of human resources.

Special Meeting

The board of education set a special meeting for executive session personnel on Thursday, January 10, 2019 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the district office in the board conference room.

Survey Results

Rick Nobles with Patron Insight, Inc. presented the results of the opinion survey of Salina residents regarding questions about the district's services on behalf of USD 305.

  • Ann Zimmerman, board member, attended the Smoky Hill Education Service Center (SHESC) Executive Cabinet meeting, the KASB annual conference and the South High School play.
  • Jim Fletcher, board member, attended the KASB annual conference and holiday programs in schools.
  • Gary Denning, board member, attended the KASB annual conference and the SHESC Executive Cabinet meeting.
  • Emma Doherty, board member, visited Stewart Elementary School on behalf of the entire board.
  • Nedra Elbl, president, attended the Chamber of Commerce Board meeting, the KASB annual conference, the Kansas Wesleyan University concert that included performances by both high school choirs and the South Middle School guitar performance.

Superintendent's Report

Dr. James Hardy, superintendent of schools, met with legislators to discuss USD 305 needs and interests before the 2019 legislative session begins. He attended the KASB annual conference and various USD 305 holiday programs.

The board of education recessed into executive session for personnel.

Worksession

The board of education received an update on the Eureka Math program from Linn Exline, executive director of school improvement, and Linda Ponton, instructional specialist.
