Recognitions/Presentations

You Make A Difference

Staff members are nominated by colleagues to receive a You Make a Difference Award for their support of students and the mission of Salina Public Schools. Board of Education members surprise recipients during their workday with a lapel pin and a handwritten note.

Andrea Young, Counselor
Central High School

In addition to full-time counselor responsibilities, Andrea stepped up to ensure student progress details such as enrollment, transcripts and classes were maintained perfectly during a transition in leadership at Salina Virtual Innovation Academy. Her grace, determination and patience were amazing. Thank you for making a difference, Andrea!

Chrystal Garman, Paraeducator
Stewart Elementary School

In charge of a morning tutoring program for iREADY math, Chrystal shows up early in order to be ready for more than 30 students. Her commitment to the students is evident in the personal connections she builds that results in their hard work and academic gains including a jump in scores. Thank you, Chrystal, for making a difference!

Alyssa Crowther, Virtual Teacher
Salina Virtual Innovation Academy

During a leadership transition, Alyssa accepted the extra responsibility of learning the administrative side of the instructional delivery platform used at Salina Virtual Innovation Academy. She successfully enrolled all students in their courses, updated and added new data. Thank you, Alyssa, for your patience, grace and for making a difference!

Logan McDowell, Grade 3 Teacher
Sunset Elementary School

Logan plans and leads Sunset’s character education assemblies each month. His leadership is greatly appreciated and his surprises such as doing flips, being silly or leading songs is always anticipated by the students. Thank you, Logan, for making a difference at Sunset!

 

Teachers of the Year

The board of education recognized Chantay Hill, Heusner Elementary third grade teacher, as the Elementary Teacher of the Year, and Collin Carlson, South High social studies teacher, as the Secondary Teacher of the Year. The two teachers were presented with gift certificates from Martinelli’s, courtesy of Tony Dong, and engraved watches from Jostens, courtesy of Jeff Heline. The teachers were also presented with checks from former Chief Justice Lawton Nuss, as a part of the H.E. and Erma Lee Nuss awards, set up in honor of his parents for their historical significance and dedication to education.

 

Superintendent’s Excellence Awards

Boy’s Swimming and Diving/South and Central High: Chris Clark, Brock Dolton, Logan Fairclough, Ben Sheppard, Zack Tibbits, Carson Crow, Haden Smith. Dustin Burgardt is the swimming coach and Jeremiah Thornton is the diving coach.

Wrestling/Central High: Haylie James, Lydia Dong, Amelia Coykendall, Alison Coykendall, Jase Adam, Isaac Phimvongsa, Abram Owings, Dawson Hogan, Tyrus Young, Carlos Aguilar. Richard Brake is the coach.

Wrestling/South High: Mykayle Sutton, Breanna Stone, Kyle Rector. Kanean Wendell is the coach.

Bowling/Central High: Christopher O’Connor, Cheyenne O’Connor, Alexandra Coykendall, Rocelyn Show. Mike Kilgore is the coach.

Central High International Thespian Fundraiser and Out-of-State Field Trip

The board approved an out-of-state field trip to the International Thespian Festival in Bloomington, Indiana on June 18 to June 24, 2023 for Central High students led by Barb Hilt, Central High theatre director.

Permanent Trail and Utility Easement at South High School

The board approved the City of Salina’s request to establish a trail and utility easement as well as a temporary construction easement on the north boundary of the South High School property.

Course Proposals

The board approved the course proposals for 56 new courses for the Salina Virtual Innovation Academy as presented by Curtis Stevens, director of secondary programs.

Textbooks

The board approved the recommended textbooks and materials as presented by Curtis Stevens during the discussion agenda.

  • Mark Bandré, board member, attended a Smoky Hill Education Service Center Executive Cabinet meeting and a Meet and Confer meeting.
  • Scott Gardner, board member, delivered a You Make a Difference award at Salina Virtual Innovation Academy.
  • Jim Fletcher, vice president, delivered a You Make a Difference award at Sunset Elementary and attended a Negotations meeting.
  • Dana Kossow, board member, attended a Central Kansas Cooperative in Education Board of Control meeting and monitored the legislative session online.
  • Gabe Grant, board member, attended a Salina Education Foundation meeting.
  • Bonnie Schamberger, board member, attended a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, Meet, and Confer and delivered two You Make a Difference awards to Stewart Elementary and Central High.
  • Ann Zimmerman, president, attended a Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting, a Kansas Association of School Boards Business Operations Leadership Development (BOLD) meeting and visited the statehouse with the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce. She accompanied the Kansas Commissioner of Education, Dr. Randy Watson, as he toured sites at Salina Public Schools with Superintendent Exline.

 

Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reported that the district hosted a Council of Superintendents meeting where she presented information about our marketing enrollment campaign and our administrator orientation process. She informed the board of an SPS Chat she hosted with classified staff including discussion about the value of the substitute orientation, for which she thanked Eryn Wright, executive director of human resources/legal services, and her staff. Superintendent Exline announced the next community SPS Chat will be April 3 at 5:15 p.m. at South High and will include hearing from students who have participated in postsecondary programs and a video of CTE programs. Parents and guardians of seventh and eighth grade students are especially encouraged to attend and be introduced to important opportunities as their students enter high school. Superintendent Exline hosted Kansas Commissioner of Education Dr. Randy Watson on a tour to Central High to view the welding lab and Cottonwood Elementary to view Matthew Henderson’s classroom. They discussed the increase in Career and Technical Education opportunities at SPS and elementary math instruction. Superintendent Exline complimented Kris Upson, executive director of and operations, for his presentation about post-bond projects to the KASB BOLD audience.
