Transfer and Nonresident Enrollment Information

Per K.S.A 72-3123, 72-3124, and 72-3126, before May 1st of each year, the superintendent of schools or designee will develop and submit a recommendation to the board of education declaring the projected enrollment and number of open seats available to nonresident students. By June 1 of each year, the district will publish on its website, at a minimum, the number of students expected to attend the district in the next school year and the number of open seats available to nonresident students.

Nonresident applications for a grade level will only be accepted for schools with open seats in that grade level. An application is required for each student. A "0" indicates no seats are available at the grade level in the school.

Applications will not be accepted for the following schools due to no open seat availability in any grade level at the school: Coronado Elementary, Meadowlark Elementary, Stewart Elementary, South Middle School, and South High School.

Timeline:

  • June 1 thru June 30 – Nonresident applications accepted
  • July 15 – Nonresident applicants notified of school assignment

Resident Students
  • How does this apply to my child who is now attending a school through a transfer?
    The school your child is currently attending in 2023-2024 will be considered the student’s attending school from this point forward.

  • Will a resident or nonresident transfer application be required if my child is currently attending the school we want them to attend in 2024-2025? 

    No transfer application will be required.
    • Current 5th grader can attend secondary school current elementary feeds into
    • Current 8th grader can attend secondary school middle school feeds into
    • A nonresident student attending SPS in 2023-2024 is considered a resident student.

  • If my child is a resident student and attended their resident school in 2023-2024 but wants a different school or secondary school in 2024-2025, how do we proceed?

    You need to follow the resident transfer guidelines and apply by 5:00 p.m. on March 27. The application and more information is available on the SPS website.
     
  • If my child is a resident student but didn’t attend their resident school and want to attend a school different from what they attended in 2023-2024, what do we need to do?

    You need to follow the resident transfer guidelines and apply by 5:00 p.m. on March 27. The application and more information is available on the SPS website. You must fill out a new 2024-2025 application, resident transfer forms previously completed do not apply.
     
  • If my child attended a school on a transfer in 2023-2024 and I want them to go to the school in my area of residence, what do I need to do?

    A student always has the option to attend the school in the area of residence. Enroll them during the online enrollment process in July.

  • If we transfer and my child has an IEP, will they be eligible for transportation? 

    The IEP team makes transportation decisions for students who are on an IEP. Please contact your child’s case manager.

  • Will my child be eligible for transportation if we transfer?

    No, the parents or guardians are responsible for transportation.

  • What are the steps if we are not residents but want our child to attend SPS in 2024-2025?

    You will need to follow the guidelines for nonresident transfers that will be posted on our website on June 1. Nonresident transfer forms used before now cannot be used to apply for 2024-2025.
     
  • Will my child be eligible for transportation if we transfer?

    No, the parents or guardians are responsible for transportation of nonresident transfer students. 

  • If we transfer and my child has an IEP, will they be eligible for transportation?
