Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reported that a free training, Handling Upset, is open to all community members. The program, based upon Conscious Discipline which focuses on behavior management strategies that help turn everyday situations into learning opportunities, is an eight week e-learning course that starts in September. She shared an August 29 panel discussion about addressing substance use and health choices that is open to all community members. Information can be found at the District website and will be sent home to parents and guardians. Superintendent Exline reported that teachers are participating in a Visible Learning foundation day training on Wednesday, August 9. She reported that an informational letter was sent to employees about the impasse between Salina Regional Health Center (SRHC) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas (BCBSKS). Superintendent Exline met with Joel Phelps, president of SRHC, to gain a better understanding of the situation and will be meeting this week with leaders of other Salina organizations affected by the impasse. The District Benefits Committee will be meeting to review the District’s health insurance plan, look at options and make recommendations. District employees will remain covered under BCBS through September 30, 2024 and the district is working diligently to ensure that access to covered services will remain local. Superintendent Exline urged BCBSKS and SRHC to return to the negotiations table to resolve their impasse.
