Superintendent’s Excellence Awards

 

Cross Country/Salina High School Central: William Griffith, senior, finished 19th at state. Brad Dix is the team’s coach.

 

Cross Country/Salina High School South: Grace Allen, senior, finished 43rd at state; Izaac Leonard, senior, finished 56th at state; and Olivia Mancino-Hinde, junior, finished 58th at state. Travis Peterson is the team’s coach.

 

Girls’ Tennis/Salina High School Central: Janae Montoya, sophomore, went 4-1 and placed 5th; Katelyn Rupe, freshman, Mackenzie Nutter, senior, and Addison Renfro, freshman, went 4-2 and placed 7th; and Claire Renfro and Mallory Renfro, freshmen, went 1-2. The girls’ tennis qualifiers were 5A state runner-up as a team. McKenzie Weishaar is the team’s coach.

 

Girls’ Tennis/Salina High School South: Iliana Armbrust, senior, and Tess Daily, junior, placed 5th at state in doubles; and Emma Shulda, senior, qualified in singles. Brian Pekarek is the team’s coach.

 

Girls’ Golf/Salina High School South: The South High girls’ golf team had six state qualifiers this season: Zoe Norton, senior, placed 16th; Madison Durr, freshman; Danee Phillips, junior; Payton Phillips, junior; Isabel Fulkerson, sophomore; and Emily Bergmann, junior. Jason Hooper is the team’s coach.

 

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School Central: The Central High math team had 10 students competing at Fort Hays: Nathan Goldbach, freshman; Alyssa Maas, freshman; John Rose, freshman; Brock Dolton, sophomore; Nehemiah Gomendoza, sophomore; Vy Le, junior; Lucas Panceri, junior; Charles Goldbach, senior; Candace Gomendoza, senior; and Ben Kraft, senior. Central High math team placed 3rd overall in the high school category at Fort Hays. Matt Dykas is the team’s coach.

 

Fort Hays State Math Relays/Salina High School South: The South High math team had 10 students competing at Fort Hays: Paul Hawksworth, sophomore; Sarah Kimani, sophomore; Alexander Mueller, junior; William Fulkerson, junior; JoLee Hurren, junior; Rohan Patel, senior; Emma Shulda, senior; Zachary Davidson, senior; Iliana Armbrust, senior; and Avery McComber, senior. South High math team placed 6th overall in the high school category at Fort Hays. Candace Mahoney is the team’s coach.

 

Robotics/Salina High School South: The South High robotics team had 10 students qualifying. They were: Marcus Anariba, senior; William Fulkerson, junior; Matt Jolin, sophomore; Alexander Mueller, junior; Krish Patel, sophomore; Damian Rodriguez, sophomore; Zachary Salas, senior; Porter Scoville, junior; Sarah Thongphetmanichanh, freshman; and Tyler Witte, freshman. South High robotics team finished 3rd in the robotics competition at the Kansas BEST Regional Hub. This qualified them to compete at the National BEST Hub competition. Lyric Cairns and Adam Lesser are the team’s coaches.

Kansas Preschool Pilot Grant

The board of education approved the Kansas Preschool Pilot Grant for fiscal year 2022-2023 in the amount of $189,800.

 

CKCIE Gift Acceptance

The board of education approved the gift of two Tobii Dynavox speech generating devices in the amount of $30,000 to Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE).

 

Approve Gift Request

The board of education approved the gift of disinfectant wipes from Project Teacher in the amount of $150,000.

 

Substitute Employee Retention Incentive

The board of education approved the addition of the Substitute Employee Retention Incentive.

 

Head Start Vaccine and Masking Requirements

Lesa Larson, director of Heartland Early Education, provided an overview of current Head Start Program Performance Standards relating to universal masking and COVID-19 vaccine requirements for grant recipient staff.

 

USD 305 Return to Instruction

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reviewed the “Return to Instruction Plan” and reported additional information.

  • Mark Bandré, board member, attended a Salina Education Foundation (SEF) Executive Board meeting, delivered a You Make A Difference Award at Schilling Elementary, attended the Smoky Hill Education Service Center (SHESC) Executive Cabinet meeting and Legislative Luncheon and visited Heusner Elementary with fellow board members.
  • Gabe Grant, board member, attended the Central Kansas Cooperative in Education (CKCIE) Board of Control meeting and visited Heusner Elementary with fellow board members.
  • Dana Kossow, board member, attended the CKCIE Board of Control meeting, SEF meetings, Coronado Elementary’s chili cook-off and the SHESC Legislative Luncheon.
  • Ann Zimmerman, vice president, attended the SHESC Legislative Luncheon, a NEA-Salina Executive Board meeting, an Equity Council meeting, new board member orientation and visited Heusner Elementary with fellow board members.

Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, thanked UMB Bank for a staff appreciation luncheon at the district office and the Credit Union of America (and Project Teacher) for providing YOOBI boxes for students at Oakdale Elementary. Superintendent Exline attended a legislative forum at the Salina Area Chamber of Commerce and met with federal and state legislators. She joined other administrators for lunch and a tour hosted at Transitions. Superintendent Exline reminded everyone of calendar dates including the end of 2nd quarter on December 21, no school on December 22 due to a teacher workday and that winter recess is December 23-January 3. She reported that students do not return until January 5 because January 4 is a teacher inservice day. On behalf of USD 305 students and staff, Superintendent Exline thanked Emma Doherty, outgoing board member, for her service.
