  Water Heater Replacement Bid

  The board of education approved the bid of Superior Plumbing & Heating Co. in the amount of $28,202 for replacement of a water heater at Central High School.

  The board of education approved the 2020-2021 Heartland Child Care Partnership contracts.

   

  Mental Health Grant Request

  The board of education approved the Mental Health Intervention Team Program grant request for projects that coordinate school-based services with a community mental health center.

   

  2020-2021 School Site Councils

  The board of education approved the 2020-2021 school site councils’ memberships and meeting dates.

   

  Set Special Meeting

  The board of education approved setting a special meeting on Tuesday, June 16, 2020 at the Rolling Hills Zoo Conference Center for a board retreat.

   

  Handbook Approvals

  The board of education approved the 2020-2021 elementary, middle and high school handbooks.

   

  Summer School

  The board of education approved the 2020 Summer School program.

   

  Capital Improvement Plan

  The board of education approved the Capital Improvement Plan.

   

  Facility Use through Summer Recess 2020

  The board of education approved that facility requests shall be limited to USD 305 employee requests and for the exclusive use of USD 305 students until Saline County has reached the phase out order. Exceptions include the natatorium at South High School and the districts’ outside facilities.

   

  1-to-1 Technology

  The board of education approved the 1-to-1 technology request for grades K-12 using Chromebooks beginning with the 2020-2021 school year.

   

  2020-2021 Chromebook Handbook

  The board of education approved the Chromebook Handbook.

   

  Elementary Phonics – Units of Study

  Tiffany Snyder, director of elementary programs, gave a report recommending that USD 305 adopt a phonics program for grades K-2. The recommended text is Units of Study – Phonics.

   

  Baseball/Softball Partnership

  The board of education approved to continue to endorse the partnership with Salina Baseball Enterprises in lieu of the changes that have occurred as a result of COVID-19.

Superintendent’s Report

Linn Exline, superintendent of schools, reported that she presented about COVID-19 and its impact on education to Salina Rotary Club. She has been meeting with principals and teacher leaders to prepare for school in the fall and different contingencies. Superintendent Exline reported that Kindergarten Round-Up is virtual this year with information provided on elementary school websites. She shared,

In recent weeks we have all experienced, and seen across our country, hurt and outrage at tragic deaths resulting from racial injustice. The murder of George Floyd is a reminder that our work is not done. I want our students to know that Black Lives Matter. I want our black students to hear they matter. Now, especially, the role of education to affect positive change is critically important. Education offers hope.

Because of needs in our district, we have an Equity Council. We owe it to our students to educate ourselves. Our Council will continue to develop training for our staff and discuss ways to build understanding for our own biases and how they impact our interactions with our students. We will also continue to review policies and practices to ensure equitable access to learning and programs.

During our strategic plan listening sessions, I met with a diverse group of students. I needed to hear their experiences. I especially needed to hear from students who have had experiences very different from my own. We owe our students schools where they feel safe, heard, seen. Our journey to fight racism is far from over; we have work to do but we remain committed.
